Great Barrier Reef

Even though we are a little behind with our blog, I wanted to put a few pictures up from our trip today to the Great Barrier Reef.

We went on a day tour with a relatively small boat called Wavelength - it was great - we don't have any of the underwater pictures yet but here are some of the pictures from the boat.

Frederik next to the dingy we fortunately did not need for helicopter medevac...in case somebody got stung by a jellyfish

The Reef was great - we had three snorkeling tours during the day - we saw Nemos and a most of the other fish from Finding Nemo - it was so awesome...(and we all wore Lycra suits for protection against the jellyfish - Allan actually saw a one of these small (and probably nasty) jellyfish). The following pictures were taken by the boat crew.

Nemos hiding in the sea anemones.

Cool corals...

Yet another Nemo.

The third snorkeling site was even more exciting, it was on the outer reef - we did not see any turtles (one of the other did), but Allan saw a White Tip Reef Shark.

We are leaving the Reef after our third snorkeling tour - the white line where the waves break marks the outer side of the Reef, which coincides with the edge of the continental shelf - so from that point there is a steep drop down to around 3000 meters...

The greenish area is the Reef itself

Frederik asked if he could steer the boat, but as we where going through parts of the Reef, the Skipper said that he had to wait a little - so after a long while (after Frederik's opinion) - he finally got to steer the boat, and the Skipper said he did a great job

Nikolai also go a chance to show his Viking roots by doing a great job "driving" the boat - and "driving" was not something he called it, but what the Skipper said he was doing
